4 Steps to Feeling More Accomplished This Year

How to feel accomplished

You don’t need me to tell you that we’re heading towards the end of the year. I can see it from the emails I receive and what I read online. A lot of people are saying that it’s great if this year is over. I will not go into politics, but you know what I mean. I heard the same every year for the last three years.

I always keep thinking of the quote by Mother Teresa: “I will never attend an anti-war rally. If you have a peace rally, invite me.” So, I hope I can bring you a little piece of peace while you read this blog post.

Do you write your goals at the beginning of the year and make some plans? I do. I love planning and strategising! I love dreaming of what I want to accomplish.

If you plan also, maybe you also experienced what I’m experiencing now.

Loved this town - Swansea in Tasmania, Australia

Even though I did achieve some of my goals:

  • I published my book A Tiny Book of Joy. Publishing a book has been on my list for about ten years.

  • I just finished my script and registered it with the WGA (Writers Guild of America). Writing a script has been on my goal list and mind for a long time.

  • I spent two months with my family in Europe.

  • I visited Tasmania for the first time in my 22 years in Australia and loved it.

  • We are finally back in Bondi Beach (Sydney) and have an apartment we’re making a home after three years of moving from place to place.

These are great goals to achieve, you might say.

Side note: Tasmania was a pleasant “just happened trip”. It wasn’t on my goal list. But I did want to go to Tasmania for a while.

But some things didn’t happen. I wanted to go to Italy this year but didn’t. I went to Norway to visit my best high school friend instead. Seriously, why am I concerned that I didn’t go to Italy? Maybe it's because Italy was on my goal list, and Norway wasn’t?

Lesson: Leave space for other goals and good things to happen.

There is something else that I want to learn: appreciate what I have achieved and see good things that are happening in my life. Are you with me?

Write a list of good things that happened this year.

I also think of how many things I started but didn’t finish this year. Do you?

So here is another thing I want to do, and I invite you to join me.

Finish something that you started this year. But only if you still want to finish it. If not - cross it out and move on.

We still have almost two months before the year ends. If you read it later, I’m sure you can do something this week that you’ve been wanting to do for months before!

  • Suppose your goal was to write a book. Maybe instead you can change it to: Create an outline for my book.

  • If your goal was to start painting. Good surprise. You still can do this this year! Doing it even once will count as starting.

  • Wanted to create a 20K share portfolio but didn’t even invest one dollar? Find a book on investing. First, you should educate yourself on investing. You can finish a book before the end of the year. I’m reading “Investing with She's on the Money” by Victoria Devine, and it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for a long time! It is very relevant for Australia. But a lot of information is suitable regardless of where you’re located.

finishing things up

So, here is what I want you to leave with:

  1. Write down a list of what you have achieved this year.

  2. List all the good things that happened (use your camera roll to remind you what happened).

  3. Celebrate! ← very important

  4. Decide on one thing that you want to finish this year.

Make this one thing you want to finish this year achievable. Why? Because this will inspire you and give you confidence. If you finish something you wanted, you may even finish another before the year ends.

One thing I wanted to do was to write this article for you. So I get to choose another thing to do next :-)

Take good care of yourself,

Olya
